Short Story 1 Part 4

This is the 4th part in a short story I wrote. If you haven’t read part 1-3 yet, start here.

The noise outside had died down and the fire was burning low when Jessie looked outside again. She saw Sean sitting on a log next to it alone.  She looked around for the others but didn’t see them anywhere.  Her eyes wandered back to Sean and watched him.  As if he could her eyes on him he turned and for a moment they just looked at each other across the beach.  Without thinking she turned, walked to the door and headed out to the beach towards him at a slow steady pace. When she finally reached him she sat down on the log too.

“Where is everyone?” She asked.

“For a walk” He looked at her for a minute and she could tell he was trying to decide if he should say something or not. Over the years she had learned his many expressions.  “I’m sorry Jess.”  For a moment she thought that was all he was going to say. He had looked away and now he was staring out into the night.  “All those years ago, before all of this crap. I never even gave you the time of day and I should have.  You are an amazing person and I’m learning now just what an amazing person I let go.”

Jessie’s heart was beating fast hard.  Her voice was soft when she finally could.

“What makes you think I was ever yours to let go?”  He cocked his head as he looked at her. It was another look she knew so well.

“Come on Jessie.  We both know how you felt about it me. You never even tried to keep it a secret. Damn, you would have died to know I felt that same way too about you.  I was just afraid to upset Keith so I never did. ”

Her eyes were on the sand below her bare feet. She couldn’t have looked at him just then. She felt his eyes on her though.

“Why now?” she asked. Her voice was low at first.  Then she looked up and her voice no longer felt weak and low. It felt strong and loud. “Why now, Sean, wen you are engaged to marry Allison and when my life is all but falling apart.  When I have a four year old sleeping upstairs. Why now?”

“Maybe it’s the beer? Maybe it’s seeing you again? Maybe, I don’t know.  i just felt like I needed to tell you.”

She felt her blood start to boil.  She couldn’t count the moments, days, or even years she would have died to hear him say those words to her. But now, right now when she was already nursing the open wounds of her husband leaving her, she couldn’t take it.  It was like he was stirring up old feelings for nothing.

“I see.” Was all she said before she jumped up and turned away.

“Please don’t go. Stay. I’m sorry if I upset you.”  He clearly didn’t realize the extent of hurt his words caused her. He had never thought that far ahead to think maybe it wasn’t the best time to say all of this after all. “Damn, I’m sorry.” He said again.

She spun around and this time she couldn’t hold the tears in. They were rolling down her face.

“Why? So you can mock me some more. Throw my past feelings in my face some more?  Go head, toss in the fact that my husband of five years just left me, Sean, for my best friend.  Go to hell.” She turned and started storming away when she saw out of the corner of her eye him jump up and start to follow her only to fall on his face in the sand.
