Thank you for reading another part of my short story. If you have not yet read the first part of it, start here.
“Damn it, Sean!” Jessie sighed reaching down to help her up.
“Whoa, now that was embarrassing.” He said sounding very somber. “Jessie, I had no intention of hurting you tonight. I didn’t mean to throw anything in your face and I would never rub in what that bastard did to you.”
He fell back onto the log looking defeated and feeling the same way, Jessie sat down next to him.
“I’m sorry. I’ve been so on edge lately. I’m unhappy. Of course I’m unhappy. I brought Kyle here because we both needed it. He needed to see that I could be happy again, Sean. I don’t want my son remembering me this way.” She was staring at sand. When Sean didn’t respond she went on. “I gave him my life. I quit my job, stopped seeing friends, with the exception of that slut Trina, and I slaved for him every single day and night. Look what I have to show for it.”
He turned to her then and grabbed her hand. She felt it wrap around hers completely. Her hand felt warm in his. A warmth she hadn’t felt in forever.
“You have Kyle, Jess. He is a beautiful smart boy. You’ve done an amazing job raising him.” Pulling her hand away because it just felt too right, she sighed.
“I know. I know you are right. It just isn’t fair.” She looked up at him then. ” I have to find a job when he goes to school next month. I don’t know where to start.”
“Allison wants to quit her job right away and have kids.” She was startled by the change in conversation. She was shocked at how much hearing him and Allison were going to have kids made her feel sad. Looking at him she saw doubt. “I’m not sure I am ready, Jess. I want kids. I really do, but now? I don’t know. Things aren’t great with us anymore. I’m getting married to her in two months and I don’t know if I want to anymore. ”
“Do you still love her, Sean?” She asked looking him right in the eye. There was doubt all over his face but she wasn’t sure if it was about Allison or the kids.
“I use to think I did, Jess. ” he was quiet for a moment. “but now I’m not sure I do.”
Jessie could feel her heart beating in her throat as she sat there gazing into the dying fire. She could feel him next to her also lost in thought.
Then he turned to her and gently turned her face to him. His big brown eyes burned into hers and she could see flames dancing in them. He was close enough she could feel his breath on her cheeks.
How, she would ask herself later, did she end up in front of a fire on this cool July night with her brother’s best friend. A friend she almost loved many years ago. Now that she was no longer looking for a relationship and he was with another woman , would she end up here with him. A questions she would ask all night long, why would she torture herself by being here with him when he clearly belonged to someone else.
She was lost in his eyes when he spoke.
“Jessie, are you okay?” and the moment was over. The tender look was gone replaced with confusion.
“I really have to get back. Kyle may wake up.” She stood quickly and started to walk away.
“Do you want to know why?” He asked as she hurried away but she never looked back.
So this is a great stopping point. I promise that tomorrow is the last part! You won’t want to miss it! 🙂
